About

Gnathochromis permaxillaris is a deep-bodied cichlid from the benthic sandy zones of Lake Tanganyika, possessing one of the most protrusible jaws of any cichlid. It uses this remarkable adaptation to suck invertebrates from the substrate surface. An infrequently kept species that rewards the experienced aquarist willing to meet its particular water-quality requirements.

Care Guide

Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; low nitrates critical. Tank: 200L+; fine sand substrate 7-10cm deep; moderate lighting. Feeding: Sinking pellet, frozen Mysis, Artemia, bloodworm; target-feed if needed. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species outside spawning; maternal mouthbrooder. Compatibility: Xenotilapia species, Aulonocranus dewindti, Cyprichromis leptosoma.
