Gnathonemus petersii, the Elephant Nose Fish or Peter's Elephantnose, has a remarkable elongated lower jaw extension used for electrolocation — finding food and communicating. One of the most unusual and intelligent freshwater fish. Nocturnal and sensitive.
Soft, slightly acidic water. Temperature 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.0. Sandy substrate. Nocturnal — provide caves. Very intelligent — recognises keeper. Avoid housing with fin-nippers or aggressive species. Feed frozen bloodworm and Mysis.
