Gobiocichla wonderi
Also known as: Wonders' Goby-Cichlid, Cross River Goby-Cichlid
Origin: Cross River, Nigeria/Cameroon
Gobiocichla wonderi is one of the most extraordinary cichlids in the world, occupying a niche more typically associated with gobiiform fish — clinging to smooth rock faces in powerful current using highly developed pectoral fins. It is collected from rocky rapids sections of the Cross River system along the Cameroon–Nigeria border, where it lives pressed flat against boulders in the strongest flow.
In the aquarium, G. wonderi requires very high water movement and an arrangement of smooth, large boulders or slate slabs that allow it to exhibit its natural clinging behaviour. It is a territorial cave-spawner forming a pair bond, and breeding has been achieved in specialist setups. The species is secretive and seldom visible unless the tank is set up to its exacting needs.
This is a fish strictly for the rheophilic specialist. Water must be well-oxygenated, moderately hard, and maintained with strong directional flow. Compatibility is limited to the fastest, most current-adapted tankmates.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–15, KH 3–10); maximum oxygenation and laminar flow. Tank: 100 L minimum; smooth large boulders or slate slabs positioned against strong powerhead current. Feeding: Small live or frozen invertebrates — brine shrimp, bloodworm, small crustaceans; grazes biofilm naturally. Breeding: Cave-spawner; clinging pair spawns in rock crevices — species tank essential for breeding. Compatibility: Species tank strongly recommended; possibly with other current-adapted species such as hillstream loaches.
