Tanganicodus irsacae
Also known as: Goby Cichlid, Irsacae Goby Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Tanganicodus irsacae is part of the endemic goby-cichlid tribe Eretmodini, adapted to the oxygen-rich wave-pounded rocky shoreline of Lake Tanganyika. Its flattened, goby-like body and paired anal fins allow it to hug the substrate in strong current. A specialist species requiring clean, highly oxygenated water and a group to exhibit natural shoaling behaviour.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; high oxygenation and surface agitation. Tank: 100L+; rocky substrate with strong water flow from powerhead; algae growth encouraged. Feeding: Herbivore wafer, spirulina-based flake, blanched greens; grazes algae naturally. Behaviour: Shoaling species; keep 6+; males display laterally to one another but rarely cause serious injury. Compatibility: Other goby cichlids of different genera (Eretmodus, Spathodus); avoid aggressive species.
