Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Gold Angelfish, Golden Angelfish, Gold Angel
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Gold Angelfish is a captive strain carrying the gold locus mutation that suppresses black melanin, resulting in a warm, uniform golden-yellow body. The stripes are entirely absent or reduced to faint ghost bars, and the fins take on a translucent amber-gold hue.
This morph was one of the earliest domestic angelfish colour variants and remains popular for its clean, warm appearance. It contrasts beautifully with darker tank mates and dark substrate/background setups. Gold angels are fully domesticated and among the hardiest angelfish morphs available.
As with all angelfish, they require a tall aquarium with stable warm water, a varied diet, and compatible tank mates. They breed readily and make excellent introductory cichlids for aquarists moving from community fish keeping.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 1–6; weekly 25–30% water changes recommended. Tank: 150 L tall aquarium; dark substrate and background maximise the golden colouration's visual impact. Feeding: Omnivore diet: quality cichlid pellets, colour-enhancing flake, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. Breeding: Reliable spawner; lays eggs on broad leaves or vertical surfaces; both parents guard eggs and fry. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium-sized community fish; remove fin-nippers and very small tank mates.
