Pethia semifasciolata
Also known as: Gold Barb, Chinese Barb, Half-banded Barb
Origin: East Asia (China, Vietnam)
Originally described from southern China and northern Vietnam, the Gold Barb (Pethia semifasciolata) is an adaptable and resilient cyprinid that thrives across a wide range of water conditions. Its golden-yellow body with faint dark lateral spotting and reddish tints on the fins make it a visually appealing but undemanding schooling species. It grazes on algae and plant matter alongside accepting commercial foods readily.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.0–8.0, wide hardness tolerance (GH 5–20). Tank: 80 L minimum; tolerates planted and bare setups alike. Feeding: Omnivore; readily accepts flake, pellets, algae wafers, and frozen foods. Behaviour: Peaceful schooler; keep in groups of 6+; may nibble soft-leaved plants. Compatibility: Ideal community fish; compatible with most peaceful species including tetras, corydoras, and livebearers.
