Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Gold Comet Platy, Comet Platy
Origin: Captive bred
The Gold Comet Platy takes its name from the dark streak or spot at the base of the caudal fin that contrasts against the golden-yellow body, creating the impression of a comet streaking through the aquarium. The rest of the body is a warm, consistent gold with no additional patterning.
This restrained, elegant pattern appeals to hobbyists who prefer understated beauty over the more flamboyant multicolour platys. The comet marking is consistent and heritable, making it a reliable variety for breeders.
A very hardy, adaptable fish suitable for any peaceful community aquarium; the Gold Comet is an excellent companion for other livebearers, tetras, and gentle catfish.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 10–20; tolerant of a range of conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted community aquarium; no special requirements. Feeding: Quality flake, colour foods, spirulina; 2 meals daily. Breeding: Prolific livebearer; 20–80 fry per brood; comet pattern reliably heritable. Compatibility: Ideal peaceful community fish.
