Mastacembelus erythrotaenia
Also known as: Gold Fire Eel, Xanthic Fire Eel, Golden Fire Eel
Origin: Southeast Asia (captive-bred xanthic variant)
This xanthic colour variant of Mastacembelus erythrotaenia represents one of the most extraordinary and coveted freshwater fish in the hobby. Rather than the typical jet-black body with vivid red lateral markings, this variant displays a brilliant golden-yellow to deep amber colouration across the entire body and fins, the result of a genetic reduction in dark pigment.
Extremely scarce — only a handful of specimens are known to enter the trade annually — each individual commands a very significant premium reflecting its rarity. Despite this exclusivity, its care requirements are identical to the standard fire eel: a very large aquarium with deep fine sand, excellent filtration, a completely sealed lid, and a long-term commitment of potentially two decades.
Earthworms are the food of choice. The golden colouration is best appreciated against a dark sandy substrate under warm white or amber lighting. This is a fish for experienced, dedicated keepers who can provide the infrastructure and long-term commitment that this extraordinary and irreplaceable specimen deserves.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 5–15, KH 2–8. Tank: Minimum 400 L, deep fine sand, dark substrate, excellent filtration, absolutely sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms preferred, prawns, mussel, bloodworm, and sinking pellets. Breeding: Extremely rare; standard fire eel egg-scattering assumed. Compatibility: Large robust community fish only; will consume small fish and invertebrates.
