Baryancistrus xanthellus
Also known as: Gold Flash Pleco, L177, Gold Nugget Pleco L177
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
Baryancistrus xanthellus L177 is a further form of the Gold Nugget Pleco complex characterised by an extremely dense, fine scattering of golden-yellow spots across a very deep black body, combined with particularly broad and vivid yellow fin margins. In some specimens the spot density is so high the gold colour appears to nearly overwhelm the black ground, creating a particularly luminous effect under strong lighting.
Care requirements are identical to other Baryancistrus xanthellus forms: warm, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water in the 26–30°C range, pH 6.0–7.0, minimum 200 L aquarium, smooth boulders, and caves. Diet should centre on biofilm grazing supplemented with quality sinking algae wafers, Repashy gel foods, and occasional meaty treats.
The L177 is semi-aggressive toward similarly coloured plecos and should be the only gold-spotted pleco in the aquarium. Breeding has been achieved in large, well-maintained setups. It is a showpiece species that rewards the investment in suitable large aquarium conditions with years of impressive display.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft and highly oxygenated; very strong flow critical. Tank: Minimum 200 L; smooth boulders, caves, driftwood; no other gold-spotted Baryancistrus. Feeding: Biofilm grazer; algae wafers, Repashy, blanched courgette, occasional bloodworms or brine shrimp. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; stable high temperatures and pristine water trigger spawning. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive toward similar-coloured plecos; peaceful with dissimilar community fish.
