Baryancistrus xanthellus
Also known as: Gold Nugget Pleco, L018, L081, L177
Origin: South America (Brazil, Rio Iriri)
The Gold Nugget Pleco (Baryancistrus xanthellus) is one of the most coveted and visually arresting plecos available to freshwater aquarists. Native exclusively to the Rio Iriri, a tributary of the Rio Xingu in Brazil, it inhabits fast-flowing, warm, extremely well-oxygenated rocky rivers. Its body is jet black, densely covered with vivid yellow spots of uniform size, and its dorsal and caudal fins are trimmed with a bold yellow-orange border, creating an unmistakable and spectacular appearance. Multiple L-number designations exist for this species (L018, L081, L177), reflecting natural geographic color variations in spot size and border width. Growing to approximately 25 cm, the Gold Nugget is a sizeable pleco requiring a large aquarium. It is endemic to a specific stretch of river that has been significantly impacted by dam construction in Brazil, making captive specimens increasingly important. In the aquarium, it requires very warm water, high oxygenation, strong current, and soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water. It is an omnivore that feeds primarily on biofilm, algae, and organic matter attached to rocks and wood, but also requires protein-rich supplemental feeding. The Gold Nugget is peaceful toward other species but can be territorial with conspecifics in limited space. It is an intermediate-level fish due to its specific environmental demands.
Tank Setup: A minimum of 200 liters is required. Provide a high-flow setup using a canister filter supplemented by one or more powerheads. Decorate with smooth river rocks, driftwood, and minimal substrate (fine sand or bare bottom). Open areas for grazing and strong current zones should be provided. Caves of appropriate size are important for shelter and potential breeding.
Water Parameters: Target pH 6.0–7.5, GH 3–15, KH 1–8, and temperature 25–30°C. Warm temperatures and exceptionally high oxygen levels are critical. Surface agitation should be vigorous. Any drop in oxygen levels at elevated temperatures can quickly become dangerous.
Filtration: Powerful filtration is non-negotiable. Use a large canister filter with additional powerhead-driven circulation. Weekly water changes of 30–40% help maintain the pristine water quality this species is adapted to.
Feeding: Offer high-quality sinking wafers, blanched vegetables, and biofilm-rich driftwood. Unlike purely herbivorous plecos, the Gold Nugget benefits from occasional protein supplementation with sinking shrimp pellets, bloodworms, or krill. Varied diet prevents nutritional deficiencies.
Social Behavior: Peaceful toward other community fish. Territorial toward other plecos, particularly of similar size. Only one Gold Nugget per standard aquarium unless housed in a very large, heavily furnished setup.
Health: Sensitive to low oxygen and elevated nitrates. Maintain spotless water conditions. This species does not tolerate neglect of water changes well.
