Baryancistrus xanthellus
Also known as: Gold Nugget Pleco, L018, L085, L177, LDA060
Origin: Xingu River, Pará state, Brazil

The Gold Nugget Pleco (Baryancistrus xanthellus) is one of the most spectacular and sought-after loricariid catfish in the aquarium hobby, native to the fast-flowing, rocky Xingu River in the Pará state of Brazil. The Xingu is a warm, crystal-clear, oxygen-rich river with a unique ecological community, and many of its endemic fish are among the most coveted in the trade.
B. xanthellus is immediately recognizable: a jet-black to dark brown body is densely covered with uniform bright yellow to golden spots of variable size, and the dorsal fin has a distinctive wide yellow band along its outer edge. The exact spot pattern and size varies between individuals and has given rise to multiple 'L-number' designations (L018, L085, L177, LDA060) representing different size and pattern variants from different collection locations.
Gold Nugget Plecos are xylophages — wood-eaters — with rasping mouthparts adapted for grazing algae and biofilm from rocky substrate and driftwood. They require hard driftwood or smooth rocks in the aquarium as resting and grazing surfaces, and also as a dietary supplement (they consume wood cellulose as an important component of their diet).
Reaching 25–30 cm, Gold Nugget Plecos are medium to large plecos. They are territorial with conspecifics and other plecos, making solo or carefully managed housing important. They are peaceful toward non-pleco species of appropriate size.
Gold Nugget Plecos have specific requirements reflecting their Xingu River origins: warm temperatures (26–30°C), high oxygen levels, strong current, and clean water are essential. pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 5–15 dGH, and temperatures 26–30°C are appropriate. They are intolerant of cold temperatures and poor water quality.
A minimum 200-liter aquarium is recommended for an adult. Provide strong water movement (powerheads or strong filter returns), high aeration, smooth rounded rocks, and multiple pieces of driftwood for grazing, resting, and hiding. Sand or fine gravel substrate is preferred.
Feed a diet centered on algae and plant matter: quality algae wafers, blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and sweet potato. Supplement with driftwood (essential as dietary fiber). Occasional protein supplements (sinking pellets, bloodworms) can be offered weekly but should not form the bulk of the diet. Overfeeding protein causes health issues.
Gold Nugget Plecos are territorial toward other plecos and bottom-dwelling species that intrude on their territory, particularly other Baryancistrus. Keep only one Gold Nugget per tank unless the aquarium is very large (400+ liters) with multiple distinct territories. They are peaceful toward mid-water and upper-level community fish.
Excellent filtration and frequent water changes of 30–40% weekly are essential. Monitor for algae growth as dietary supplement, and provide fresh vegetables regularly as the primary food source.
