Gold Nugget Pleco L001/L022

Baryancistrus xanthellus, marketed under the L001/L022 designation depending on spot size and collection point, is one of the most celebrated plecos in the aquarium hobby. Native to the warm, oxygen-rich, fast-flowing rocky stretches of the Rio Xingu in Pará, Brazil, it demands replication of those conditions to truly thrive. Its striking jet-black body covered in vivid gold spots and trimmed with broad yellow fin margins makes it an immediate centrepiece in any large aquarium.

In the wild this species grazes biofilm and algae from smooth boulders, supplementing its diet with small invertebrates. In captivity it accepts a wide range of foods including sinking algae wafers, Repashy gel foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional meaty treats. It grows to a substantial 25 cm and requires a spacious, well-filtered tank with powerful flow and high oxygenation.

Males become territorial toward similarly coloured or patterned plecos and conspecifics. They should be housed with peaceful, dissimilar tankmates and provided with caves or crevices to claim as their own. Water temperature should remain between 26–30°C — lower temperatures are poorly tolerated.

Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderately hard; strong flow and high oxygenation are essential. Tank: Minimum 200 L; smooth boulders, slate caves, and driftwood to replicate the rocky Xingu biotope. Feeding: Biofilm and algae grazer; supplement with sinking wafers, Repashy, blanched courgette, and occasional bloodworms. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; requires stable high temperatures and pristine water to trigger spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with dissimilar community fish; territorial toward conspecifics and similarly coloured plecos.
