Baryancistrus xanthellus
Also known as: Gold Nugget Pleco, L018, Large-spot Gold Nugget
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
Baryancistrus xanthellus L018 is the large-spot variant of the iconic Gold Nugget Pleco, distinguished by its particularly oversized, well-separated golden-yellow spots on a deep black body. The vivid yellow dorsal and caudal fin edging is proportionally broad, maximising its visual impact. Like all Gold Nugget forms, it is endemic to the warm, fast-flowing rocky sections of the Rio Xingu in Pará state, Brazil — a habitat now partially compromised by the Belo Monte dam.
This species requires warm water (26–30°C), strong flow, and excellent oxygenation to thrive. It grazes biofilm and algae from smooth rocks and should be provided with a variety of sinking foods. At up to 25 cm it needs a spacious aquarium of at least 200 L with powerful filtration adequate to handle the considerable waste it produces.
The L018 designation specifically refers to the large-spot form and commands a premium over the smaller-spot L001 variant. Males are territorial toward similarly coloured plecos. Breeding has been achieved in captivity in large, well-maintained setups.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to slightly hard; very strong flow and high oxygenation critical. Tank: Minimum 200 L; smooth boulders, caves, driftwood; avoid sharp substrates. Feeding: Biofilm grazer; provide algae wafers, Repashy, blanched vegetables, and occasional bloodworms or brine shrimp. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards and fans eggs; stable high temperature and excellent water quality required. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive toward conspecifics and similarly coloured plecos; peaceful with dissimilar community fish.
