Baryancistrus xanthellus (L072)
Also known as: Gold Nugget Pleco L072, Small-spot Golden Nugget, Fine-spot Golden Nugget
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
The Gold Nugget Pleco L072 is the third and most distinctively spotted form of the iconic Golden Nugget complex, differentiated from L018 and L019 by its smallest, most densely packed gold spots evenly distributed across the jet-black body. Combined with the same vivid yellow fin margins shared by all three forms, L072 is considered by many collectors to be the most striking variety.
Like all members of the Baryancistrus xanthellus complex, L072 is endemic to the Rocky Xingu rapids and demands the highest standards of water quality. It requires warm, highly oxygenated water with very strong current, closely replicating the fast-flowing, low-nutrient environment of its native Rio Xingu. Strong canister filtration plus powerheads are recommended.
The Baryancistrus group can live for 15–20 years and grows to 25 cm, making any Golden Nugget a long-term investment. L072 should be the focal point of a well-designed Xingu biotope aquarium. Provide at least one dedicated cave and house with active mid-level fish that will not compete for bottom territory.
Water: pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 26–30°C, GH 2–8, KH 1–4; pristine Xingu conditions essential. Tank: 200 L minimum; rocky decor, multiple caves, powerful canister filter and powerhead. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, driftwood, blanched veg, sinking pellets, occasional protein supplement. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; challenging but documented in dedicated setups. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; peaceful with robust mid-water community fish.
