Aplocheilus lineatus
Also known as: Gold Panchax, Striped Panchax, Sparkling Panchax
Origin: Peninsular India and Sri Lanka

The Gold Panchax (Aplocheilus lineatus) is native to the freshwater systems of peninsular India and Sri Lanka, where it inhabits a wide range of environments including slow-moving rivers, ponds, irrigation channels, and flooded rice paddies. The 'Gold' variant in the aquarium trade represents a selectively bred form with enhanced golden-yellow base coloration compared to the more olive-green wild type.
Males display remarkable ornamentation: horizontal rows of iridescent spots in red, orange, yellow, blue, and green scatter across the flanks and fins, creating a sparkling, gemstone-like effect. The dorsal surface is warm golden-yellow. Females are more subdued with fewer, less intense markings and a more rounded body profile.
Aplocheilus lineatus is among the largest members of the Aplocheilidae family, reaching 10–12 cm. It is a surface-oriented fish, spending most of its time at or near the water surface where its upturned mouth is perfectly positioned to take insects, larvae, and small organisms from the surface film. In the wild, this species is valued as a natural mosquito larvae predator.
Gold Panchax are formidable small predators — they will consume any fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in their mouths. This predatory nature means they require careful tankmate selection, limited to species too large to be eaten.
Gold Panchax are hardy and adaptable: pH 6.5–8.0, hardness 5–20 dGH, and temperatures 22–28°C. They tolerate a wide range of conditions but do best in neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard water reflecting their Asian origin habitats.
A minimum 80-liter aquarium is recommended for a pair or small group. Floating plants (Salvinia, Pistia, Riccia) are essential — they provide cover and spawning sites and replicate the heavily vegetated surfaces of their natural habitat. Dense surface cover also satisfies their preference for surface-oriented behavior.
A secure, tight-fitting lid with no gaps is absolutely essential — Gold Panchax are skilled jumpers that will escape through any opening. They are particularly prone to jumping when startled.
Feed primarily surface-dwelling foods: floating pellets, stick insects, crickets, live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and earthworms. They are enthusiastic surface feeders that readily accept most protein-rich foods but may initially refuse sinking foods.
Gold Panchax are best kept with larger, robust fish too big to be consumed: large barbs, medium cichlids, or other similarly sized robust species. Never house with small fish (under 4–5 cm), small shrimp, or nano species. Males may fight each other in small tanks — provide ample space if keeping multiple males. Regular water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain water quality.
