Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
Also known as: Gold Ram, Golden Ram, Gold German Ram
Origin: Captive bred (South America)
The Gold Ram is produced through selective breeding of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi that selects against the blue iridescence of the standard form in favour of a bright golden-yellow to canary-yellow body. Orange-red facial markings are retained and often appear more vivid against the yellow base, and the black eye bar and lateral spot remain visible. Some Gold Rams retain small amounts of blue iridescence on the flanks.
Gold Rams share the same water chemistry requirements as the standard German Blue Ram, demanding warm, slightly acidic, and very soft water for optimal health and colour expression. They are sensitive to poor water quality and should not be kept in aquariums with high nitrate levels or unstable parameters.
Despite their demanding water requirements, Gold Rams are rewarding fish for aquarists who can provide appropriate conditions. They are peaceful enough for community aquariums with small, non-aggressive tankmates and show fascinating breeding behaviour.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water (GH < 10) essential; very sensitive to nitrates — keep below 20 ppm. Tank: Minimum 60L for a pair; fine sandy substrate for natural foraging behaviour; dense planting appreciated. Feeding: Omnivore; small cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, micro-pellets. Breeding: Forms pairs; spawns on flat surfaces or in pits in the substrate; shared parental care. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with small community fish including tetras, rasboras, and dwarf corydoras.
