Danio tinwini
Also known as: Gold Ring Danio, Burmese Gold Ring Danio
Origin: Southeast Asia (Myanmar)
The Gold Ring Danio is a petite and distinctively marked species discovered relatively recently and native to the streams of northern Myanmar. At just 3.5 cm, it falls comfortably into the nano fish category and is well suited to smaller aquaria. Its most notable feature is its patterning: rather than the horizontal stripes typical of many danios, it bears rows of small golden spots and rings along a blue to silver body, creating a constellation-like effect that is unique among commonly kept danionids. In good lighting and against a dark background substrate, the gold markings shimmer attractively. The Gold Ring Danio is entirely peaceful and poses no threat to any tankmates. Like all danios, it is an active, midwater swimmer that is most comfortable and least stressed in a group of six or more individuals. It prefers moderately cool water and a gentle current. In the wild it inhabits small, clear forest streams with sandy substrate and moderate plant growth. In the aquarium a well-planted nano or small community setup suits it perfectly. It accepts most small aquarium foods readily and is adaptable to a range of water parameters. Its small size, unique markings, and peaceful nature make it a compelling choice for nano aquaria.
Tank Setup A minimum of 40 liters is workable for a school of six. A longer tank is preferable to a tall one to give these active swimmers horizontal space. Use dark sand or fine gravel, and plant densely with fine-leaved plants such as Hemianthus, Java moss, or Microsorum to provide shelter and enhance the fish's natural appearance. Gentle to moderate filtration is ideal.
Water Parameters Maintain pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Temperature of 18–25°C is appropriate; this species does not require high temperatures and may show best coloration at the cooler end of the range. No specific hardness requirements, but soft to moderately hard water is suitable. Perform weekly water changes of 20–25%, being careful not to disturb the substrate significantly with small, delicate fish in the tank.
Feeding A small omnivore that requires appropriately sized food. Offer crushed flake, micro-pellets, and baby brine shrimp. Supplement with small frozen foods such as cyclops and daphnia. Feed small amounts two to three times daily. Ensure food particles are small enough for these tiny fish to consume.
Tankmates Suitable for peaceful nano community tanks. Ideal companions include other small danios, small rasboras, nano tetras, pygmy corydoras, and small peaceful shrimp species. Avoid any fish large enough to consume them or that may compete aggressively at feeding time.
Health and Maintenance Generally hardy for its small size. Maintain stable water chemistry and quality. Monitor for common ailments such as ich. Being small, these fish are more sensitive to water quality deterioration — do not allow nitrates to accumulate.
