Hemiancistrus sp. (L053)
Also known as: Gold-seam Pleco, L053 Pleco, Golden-fin Pleco
Origin: Lower Amazon, Brazil
The Gold-seam Pleco (L053) is an elegant loricariid from the lower Amazon tributaries of Brazil. Its most distinctive feature is the golden-yellow seam that borders all its fins, providing vivid contrast against a finely spotted brown body. This combination of subtle body pattern and bright fin accents makes L053 a popular choice for collectors and enthusiasts.
L053 is an omnivore that thrives on a varied diet. In the aquarium offer algae wafers, blanched vegetables, driftwood for grazing, sinking pellets, and occasional protein supplements such as frozen bloodworm or artemia. Moderate to strong water flow and regular water changes are important for maintaining the bright golden fin colouration and overall health.
This species is moderately peaceful and integrates well into larger community aquariums. Territorial behaviour can emerge when competing with other medium-to-large plecos for caves, so provide one cave per individual. Compatible with large tetras, South American cichlids, and other robust community species.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; moderate flow, regular water changes. Tank: 180 L minimum; driftwood, smooth rock caves, moderate to strong current. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, blanched veg, sinking pellets, driftwood, occasional frozen protein. Breeding: Cave spawner; conditioning and water changes may trigger spawning behaviour. Compatibility: Peaceful with most species; territorial with other medium-large plecos over caves.
