Hemiancistrus sp. (L089)
Also known as: Gold-seam Pleco L089, L089 Pleco, Orinoco Gold-seam Pleco
Origin: Rio Orinoco, Venezuela
The Gold-seam Pleco L089 is a second, distinct population of the gold-seam type pleco collected from the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela, differentiated from the Amazonian L053 by its slightly broader yellow fin borders and a coarser, more widely spaced spot pattern on the body. It represents a fascinating example of geographic variation within a single colour-type grouping.
Care requirements for L089 closely mirror those for L053. It is an omnivore that accepts algae wafers, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets, driftwood, and protein supplements. Warm, clean water with moderate to strong flow and regular water changes maintain the vivid golden fin colouration. Driftwood is an essential component of the setup for both nutrition and shelter.
L089 is moderately peaceful and fits well into a larger community aquarium with robust South American fish. Like most medium-sized loricariids, it can be territorial toward conspecifics around caves, so ensure one dedicated hiding spot per specimen. Compatible with larger tetras, Orinoco cichlids, and other South American community species.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 25–29°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; warm clean water maintains fin colour. Tank: 180 L minimum; driftwood, rock caves, moderate to strong current. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, blanched veg, sinking pellets, driftwood, occasional frozen protein. Breeding: Cave spawner; water change and diet conditioning may trigger spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with most species; territorial with conspecifics over caves.
