Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Gold Twinbar Platy, Twinbar Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Gold Twinbar Platy is distinguished by the twinbar gene, which produces two parallel black bars at the base of the caudal fin — one at the caudal peduncle and one at the fin's trailing edge — creating a framed or bracketed appearance on the tail. Combined with a warm golden body, the effect is clean and refined.
Twinbar platies are slightly less common than the standard wagtail or mickey mouse varieties, making them a more distinctive choice for the community aquarium. They carry identical hardiness and adaptability traits to all platy varieties.
The golden body colour is best maintained with a diet that includes carotenoid-rich foods such as spirulina flake or colour-enhancing formulas.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; adaptable to most tap water conditions. Tank: 60 L minimum; plants and moderate open swimming space; standard community filtration. Feeding: Varied omnivore diet; spirulina and colour-enhancing flakes maintain the golden colouration. Breeding: Very prolific; fry robust; twinbar trait breeds true. Compatibility: Ideal community fish; highly compatible with other livebearers, tetras, and bottom dwellers.
