Tanichthys albonubes var.
Also known as: Gold White Cloud, Golden White Cloud Mountain Minnow
Origin: Color variant of Tanichthys albonubes — wild form from Baiyun Mountain streams, Guangdong province, China

The Gold White Cloud Mountain Minnow is a selectively bred color variant of Tanichthys albonubes, the original White Cloud Mountain Minnow first discovered in the Baiyun (White Cloud) Mountain near Guangzhou, China in 1932 by Tan Kan Fah. The wild-type form features a brown-olive body with a vivid red-blue lateral stripe; the Gold variant replaces the typical coloration with warm golden-yellow flanks that give the fish a distinctly different appearance while retaining the red-tipped fins and white fin borders.
The Gold White Cloud displays warm amber-yellow flanks with subtle iridescence, a faint horizontal line, brilliant red-orange fin bases, and white fin tips — together creating a delicate, jewel-like appearance. Males tend to be more vibrantly colored and slimmer; females are larger and rounder when gravid.
Reaching only 3–4 cm, White Cloud Mountain Minnows of all varieties are ideal nano fish. Their most remarkable trait is cold-water tolerance — in their native mountain stream habitat, water temperatures can drop close to freezing in winter. This makes them exceptional for unheated indoor aquariums, outdoor garden ponds (in warmer climates), and cool-water biotope setups.
They are among the hardiest, most peaceful, and easiest aquarium fish available — appropriately described in older aquarium literature as 'the poor man's neon tetra.'
Gold White Cloud Mountain Minnows are exceptionally cold-tolerant: pH 6.0–8.0, hardness 5–20 dGH, and temperatures 14–22°C. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 5–8°C briefly, but prolonged temperatures above 22–24°C cause stress and increased disease susceptibility.
A minimum 30-liter aquarium suits a group of 8–10. Provide moderate current, good oxygenation, fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Hornwort), and a dark substrate. They are ideal for nano setups, cold-water biotopes, and seasonal outdoor pond use in temperate climates.
Feed small, varied foods: quality flake food, micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and micro worms. Their small mouths require appropriately sized food. They are enthusiastic, easy feeders.
Gold White Cloud Mountain Minnows are entirely peaceful and compatible with other cold-tolerant species: Hillstream Loaches, weather loaches (Misgurnus), other danios and minnows, and cold-water corydoras. Avoid tropical species that require warmer temperatures than they can tolerate.
Keep in groups of at least 8–10 for natural schooling behavior. Weekly water changes of 25–30% maintain water quality. Their hardiness makes them ideal first fish for beginners and suitable for cool indoor rooms without aquarium heaters.
