Pomacea bridgesii
Also known as: Golden Apple Snail, Spike-topped Apple Snail, Mystery Snail
Origin: South America
Pomacea bridgesii in its golden morph is a popular and charming aquarium snail reaching up to 6cm, recognised by its glossy amber-gold shell and colourful foot. Unlike its relative Pomacea canaliculata, it is generally safe with most aquatic plants and is content to consume algae, biofilm, and decaying vegetation. It lays eggs above the waterline in distinctive pink-coral clusters.
Water: 18–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0; hard water with good calcium content is essential for shell health. Tank: Minimum 40L; leave a gap above the waterline for egg-laying; a lid is essential as it escapes easily. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched greens, calcium-rich cuttlefish bone; avoid feeding only plant matter. Behaviour: Active, peaceful, and diurnal; will actively patrol the tank for food and organic matter. Compatibility: Compatible with peaceful community fish; avoid nippy species that bite at their antennae.
