Hypsibarbus wetmorei
Origin: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam (Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages)
Hypsibarbus wetmorei is a large, elegant barb from the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages of Southeast Asia, displaying a deep golden-yellow body with vivid red-tipped fins that intensify during the breeding season in dominant males. It is a peaceful, lively schooling fish well suited to large community aquariums alongside other robust Southeast Asian species such as larger danios, other barbs, and giant gourami. This species is a strong open-water swimmer that requires ample space and regular feeding with high-quality foods.
Provide a spacious aquarium (minimum 300 L) with long open swimming areas. Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, moderate hardness (GH 5–15). Feed a varied omnivorous diet of quality pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter. Keep in schools of at least 6 for natural behavior. Water flow should be moderate to strong. Driftwood and large robust plants complete the naturalistic Southeast Asian biotope.
