About

The Golden Discus is a captive-bred colour morph celebrated for its rich, warm golden-yellow body, which ranges from pale lemon to deep amber depending on the breeding line and water conditions. Many specimens display faint turquoise or red highlights on the fins, and high-quality individuals may exhibit an almost uniform metallic sheen that is particularly striking under bright aquarium lighting.

Like all discus varieties, the Golden traces its heritage to the slow-moving, tannin-rich rivers of the Amazon basin. These fish evolved in water that is exceptionally warm, soft, and acidic — conditions that must be replicated in captivity to maintain health and promote their best coloration. In their natural habitat, discus feed opportunistically on small invertebrates, plant matter, and microorganisms associated with submerged leaf litter and root systems.

In the aquarium, Golden Discus are peaceful and somewhat regal in bearing. They move deliberately through the water column and benefit from the company of conspecifics, feeling most at ease in groups of six or more. Their warm, golden coloration can deepen or fade depending on diet, water chemistry, and stress levels, making attentive husbandry both a necessity and an art. For experienced fishkeepers who enjoy a challenge, they are among the most satisfying fish in the freshwater hobby.

Care Guide

Tank Setup

A tall aquarium of at least 200 litres is the minimum for a small group. Soft, dark substrate and the addition of driftwood and Indian almond leaves will acidify the water naturally and replicate the Amazon blackwater environment. Broad-leafed plants and dim lighting reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour. Bare-bottom tanks are popular among breeders for ease of sanitation.

Water Parameters

Temperature 28–32 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, GH 1–8, KH 0–3. Use reverse osmosis water remineralised to target parameters. Consistent, large water changes are critical — 30–50% two to three times weekly. Never allow nitrates to exceed 10 ppm.

Feeding

A varied, protein-rich diet is essential for maintaining golden colouration. Colour-enhancing discus granules, high-quality beef heart mix, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia should all feature. Feed two to three times daily in small portions and remove uneaten food immediately.

Tank Mates

Cardinal tetras, rummy-nose tetras, corydoras, and small peaceful plecos make ideal companions. Avoid fast, boisterous, or nippy species. All tank mates must be able to tolerate temperatures above 28 °C.

Behaviour

Golden Discus are dignified, slow-moving fish. They form loose social groups and occasionally display gentle dominance rituals. Breeding pairs are attentive parents, fanning and guarding eggs and allowing fry to feed from the mucus produced on their flanks.

Health

Susceptible to hole-in-the-head disease, internal worms, and bacterial infections, particularly when water quality is poor. Quarantine new fish for four weeks minimum. Maintain meticulous hygiene and provide a nutritionally complete diet to prevent deficiency-related conditions.
