Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Golden Dragon Discus, Gold Dragon Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Golden Dragon Discus pairs the warm, saturated gold of yellow discus genetics with a dragon-scale iridescent overlay to produce a fish of regal, almost royal appearance. Each scale appears multi-tonal — gold, amber, and copper — as the light angle changes, creating constant visual dynamism.
This strain requires the same diligent care as all domestic discus. The golden pigment is sensitive to dietary quality; colour-enhancing foods with carotenoids and spirulina help sustain the warm golden tones. Very soft, warm, acidic water suppresses stress bars and allows the dragon-scale pattern to fully develop.
The Golden Dragon pairs beautifully with Royal Blue or Cobalt Blue strains in a mixed discus aquarium, the warm golds contrasting vividly against the cool blues for a breath-taking display.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; stable temperature critical for pattern integrity. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dark substrate, warm-tone lighting to bring out gold and amber tones in scales. Feeding: Carotenoid and spirulina-enriched pellets, beefheart, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp nauplii. Breeding: Open spawner; dragon-scale and gold traits are partially co-dominant; breed selectively. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other discus strains, cardinal tetras, and peaceful Amazon species.
