Melanochromis auratus

Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Melanochromis auratus is one of the original mbuna species known to the hobby and remains widely kept. It displays reverse sexual dichromatism: females and juveniles are vivid yellow and black, while dominant males turn jet black with gold highlights. It is one of the more aggressive mbuna and males will relentlessly harass females and rival males.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline water. Tank: 180L minimum with abundant rockwork; sight-breaks are crucial. Feeding: Herbivore; algae-based foods; spirulina essential; minimal protein. Behaviour: Highly aggressive; dominant males will kill rivals; keep one male to several females. Compatibility: Robust mbuna community; avoid mixing with more docile species.
