Mylossoma aureum
Also known as: Golden Mylossoma, Gold Silver Dollar
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
Mylossoma aureum is a laterally compressed, disc-bodied serrasalmid that forms large schools in open-water habitats across the Amazon and Orinoco drainages. Its flanks display a warm golden iridescence that becomes more pronounced in well-conditioned fish under quality lighting. It is highly active and benefits from large groups of six or more.
As an omnivore, M. aureum accepts a varied diet including plant material, insects, and small invertebrates. Despite its piranha family membership, it is entirely peaceful and makes an excellent companion for large cichlids and other robust South American fish.
Note: not legally restricted like true piranhas in most regions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; good oxygenation important for this active open-water schooler. Tank: Minimum 500L for a school of 6; open swimming space with a moderate current; minimal planting as this species will consume soft-leaved plants. Feeding: Omnivore; pellets, flake, frozen bloodworm, blanched vegetables, and occasional fruit; varied diet maintains golden colouration. Breeding: Not regularly achieved in home aquaria; egg-scattering species. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent dither fish with large South American cichlids; avoid housing with very small fish as adults can be boisterous at feeding time.
