Baryancistrus xanthellus (L019)
Also known as: Golden Nugget Pleco, L019 Pleco, Large-spot Golden Nugget
Origin: Rio Xingu, Brazil
The Golden Nugget Pleco L019 is the large-spot form of arguably the most iconic L-number in the hobby. Endemic to the fast-flowing, warm rocky sections of the Rio Xingu in Pará state, it features a jet-black body adorned with bold golden-yellow polka dots and vivid yellow margins on the dorsal and caudal fins. L019 is differentiated from L018 and L072 by its larger, more widely spaced spot pattern.
Like all Xingu endemics, L019 demands pristine, well-oxygenated water with strong current. It is an omnivore that benefits from a varied diet including algae wafers, blanched vegetables, driftwood, sinking pellets, and supplemental protein foods. Regular large water changes and powerful filtration are essential to maintain the vivid yellow colouration.
The Golden Nugget is moderately territorial, particularly toward conspecifics and other Baryancistrus species. House it with active, robust mid-water fish such as larger tetras, flag cichlids, and other Xingu community species. Provide at least one dedicated cave per specimen.
Water: pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 26–30°C, GH 2–10, KH 1–5; pristine conditions with strong flow essential. Tank: 200 L minimum; rocky decor, multiple caves, powerful canister filter and powerhead. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, blanched vegetables, driftwood, sinking carnivore/omnivore pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs; rarely bred; requires warm, high-flow dedicated setup. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive with conspecifics; peaceful with mid-level robust community fish.
