Leuciscus idus var. auratus
Origin: Europe (captive bred)
The Golden Orfe (Leuciscus idus var. auratus) is a slender, fast-swimming pond fish with a vivid orange-gold body that shimmers as it patrols near the water surface. A Belgian and Dutch garden pond classic, it is highly active and endlessly entertaining to watch as it rises to intercept food and insects. Small juveniles school tightly and grow rapidly in good conditions, developing their full colour within the first season. Best kept in groups in well-oxygenated ponds.
Start in a pond of at least 1,000 L with good oxygenation. Golden Orfe are demanding of dissolved oxygen — strong surface movement is essential in warm weather. Cold-hardy through winter. Keep in groups of at least 3–5 and feed quality floating pellets. They grow rapidly and will need more space as they mature. Compatible with goldfish, koi, and rudd.
