About

The Golden Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi var.) is a selectively bred aquarium strain of the German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), developed to express a vivid golden-yellow to orange-gold base coloration that replaces the silver-blue tones of the standard form. Despite the color variation, Golden Rams retain the fundamental characteristics, care requirements, and charming personality of M. ramirezi.

Males display warm golden-yellow to deep orange coloration across the body, accented with iridescent blue-green scale details on the posterior flanks, a vivid red iris, and the characteristic black dorsal fin spot and elongated anterior dorsal fin rays. Females develop an intense rosy-violet to pink wash on the belly during breeding condition. Both sexes share the golden warmth of the coloration though males are generally more vivid.

Like wild-type German Blue Rams, Golden Rams form devoted monogamous pairs that spawn on flat substrate surfaces and provide extensive biparental brood care. Their parental behavior — cleaning the spawning site, guarding eggs, and herding fry — is among the most engaging cichlid behaviors observable in a home aquarium.

Golden Rams are demanding in terms of water quality and temperature consistency. They thrive in warm, soft, slightly acidic water and are less tolerant of lower temperatures or parameter fluctuations than many other community fish. For aquarists willing to meet their requirements, they are enormously rewarding.

Care Guide

Golden Rams require the same care as the German Blue Ram: soft, warm, slightly acidic water is essential. Target pH 5.5–7.0, hardness 1–10 dGH, and temperatures 26–30°C. Sustained temperatures below 25°C cause stress, immune suppression, and increased disease susceptibility, particularly hole-in-the-head disease.

A minimum 80-liter planted aquarium suits a pair. Provide fine sand substrate, dense plantings of Amazon swords, Anubias, mosses, flat spawning stones, and driftwood. Soft, acidic water is best achieved through RO water blending, peat filtration, or active substrate.

Feed varied, nutritious foods: micro-cichlid pellets, flake, small bloodworms, daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and cyclops. Varied protein-rich feeding maintains condition, intensifies golden coloration, and supports reproductive health.

Golden Rams are compatible with most peaceful community species of appropriate size: small to medium tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and peaceful catfish. Avoid nippy species (tiger barbs, serpae tetras) that target fins, or large/aggressive cichlids that bully them.

Water quality must be consistently excellent — weekly water changes of 30% with temperature-matched, soft water are mandatory. These are not forgiving fish for poor water conditions, but in good conditions they live 3–5 years and may breed regularly.
