Golden Topminnow

Fundulus chrysotus is broadly regarded as one of the most beautiful of the North American topminnows. Non-breeding males are attractively marked with rows of small iridescent spots on a greenish-gold background, but breeding males are transformed into genuinely striking fish — the body deepens to rich golden-orange, the spots intensify to gold or copper, and the fins develop vivid pigmentation. It inhabits vegetated, slow-moving coastal plain streams, swamps, and ditches from South Carolina to Texas.

In the aquarium, Golden Topminnows do best in densely planted tanks with slow water movement and soft to moderately hard water. Their preference for tannin-rich conditions makes leaf litter and driftwood appropriate additions. They are surface-oriented and appreciate floating plants that provide shelter and spawning sites.

They feed readily on live and frozen surface invertebrates and accept floating dry foods. Their spectacular breeding colouration, manageable size, and interesting spawning behaviour make them one of the most rewarding native killifish for the home aquarium.

Water: 18–28 °C, pH 6.0–8.0, soft to moderately hard; slow flow, tannins beneficial. Tank: 60 L minimum; dense planting, floating plants, driftwood, leaf litter; secure lid essential. Feeding: Live/frozen Daphnia, small insects, Artemia; floating flake and micro-pellets accepted. Breeding: Eggs attached to plant roots and floating vegetation; remove eggs for separate rearing. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive between males; peaceful with small mid-water and bottom-dwelling natives.
