Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Golden Yellow Discus, Yellow Discus, Golden Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, Brazil)
The Golden Yellow Discus is a domestic strain developed for vibrant, uniform yellow-gold pigmentation with no distracting bars or spots. High-quality specimens exhibit a richly saturated lemon-to-gold tone from gill plate to caudal fin, with the red eye providing the only contrasting colour.
Like all discus, the Golden Yellow requires warm, clean water and a nutritious diet to sustain its colour. Carotenoid-rich foods and high-quality discus-specific pellets help maintain and deepen the yellow pigment over time.
This strain is particularly striking when housed against a dark substrate and dark background, or when grouped with contrasting strains such as Cobalt Blue or Red Melon discus for a vivid multi-colour display.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; pristine water quality mandatory. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dark substrate to enhance yellow colouration, broad-leaf plants, driftwood. Feeding: Carotenoid-rich discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, brine shrimp; varied diet essential. Breeding: Open spawner; pairs often form within a group and should be moved to a dedicated breeding tank. Compatibility: Peaceful community with other discus, cardinal tetras, and small non-aggressive catfish.
