About

Botia histrionica is a medium-sized loach that reaches approximately 10 cm, displaying a striking pattern of alternating golden-yellow and dark brown to black vertical bars across the body — a pattern that justifies its common names of Golden Zebra or Burmese Loach. The coloration is particularly vibrant in well-conditioned, group-housed fish in an appropriately furnished aquarium.

Native to river systems in Myanmar and northeastern India, it inhabits fast-flowing to moderately flowing rivers and streams with sandy to gravelly substrates, often in areas with submerged wood and rocky features. Like all botiid loaches, it is highly social with a strong schooling drive and must be kept in groups to avoid stress-related behavioral problems.

In the aquarium, the Golden Zebra Loach is an active bottom-dweller that spends much of its time rooting through substrate, investigating crevices, and interacting with groupmates. It produces audible clicking sounds — a characteristic communication behavior of botiid loaches. It is semi-aggressive within its group but generally peaceful toward other species of appropriate size. It will hunt and consume aquatic snails, making it useful for pest snail control. The Golden Zebra Loach produces audible clicking sounds through the same pectoral spine mechanism as other botiid loaches, and these vocalizations are most prominent during social interactions and feeding. Attentive aquarists keeping a large group in a quiet room can hear these sounds clearly — particularly at feeding time when the group becomes highly animated and interactive.

Care Guide

Tank Setup Provide a minimum 120-liter aquarium with a fine sand substrate. Driftwood, smooth rocks, and caves are essential for shelter. Low-growing plants provide cover. A moderate to strong current from a good canister or HOB filter is beneficial. Ensure a tight-fitting lid as this species can jump.

Water Parameters Maintain pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 20–27°C. Soft to moderately hard water. Weekly water changes of 25–30% are important. Good oxygenation is valued.

Feeding Omnivorous. Offer a varied diet of sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Will consume pest snails eagerly. Feed in the evening for best response. A varied diet maintains vibrant coloration.

Social Behavior Keep in groups of at least 5. The group will establish a hierarchy through chasing and clicking interactions — this is completely normal. Larger groups of 6–8 distribute any mild aggression more widely and result in calmer, more natural behavior.

Snail Control Highly effective at controlling small snail populations. Not safe to keep with ornamental snails or small shrimp.

Tankmates Suitable with medium to larger community fish: medium tetras, barbs, danios, rasboras, and similar. Avoid very small fish that may be stressed by their active foraging.

Health Notes Prone to ich, particularly upon introduction. Quarantine for 2–4 weeks. Provide a stress-free introduction. Maintain clean substrate and stable water parameters for long-term health.

Long-term Notes Golden Zebra Loaches are healthy, robust fish that can live 8 or more years with good care. Their vocal clicking behavior increases as groups mature and social hierarchies become established. A long-term commitment to stable parameters, regular maintenance, and appropriate group size ensures these attractive loaches remain healthy and active throughout their lifespan. Introduce the full group simultaneously rather than adding fish gradually, to prevent territory establishment by early arrivals that may then exclude later additions from the group hierarchy.
