Valenciennea strigata
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Goldhead Sleeper Goby (Valenciennea strigata) is an elegant, elongated goby with a bright, clean white body, a striking vivid yellow-gold head, and a brilliant blue streak extending through the eye. It is a dedicated sand-sifter, continuously taking mouthfuls of substrate and expelling them through its gills as it sifts for small invertebrates, copepods, and organic particles — a behavior that simultaneously feeds the fish and aerates and cleans the sand bed. This constant sifting activity makes it a natural and highly functional part of the clean-up crew in reef systems with sandy substrates. Critically, lone individuals often refuse dried foods and slowly decline — a bonded mated pair is strongly recommended for long-term success.
Provide at least 150 liters with a fine sand bed of at least 5–7 cm depth for sifting. Keep as a mated pair — bonded pairs feed much more actively and are significantly more likely to accept frozen and prepared foods than lone individuals. Feed with frozen mysis and copepods; supplement with reef pods (live copepod cultures) if the fish is reluctant to accept frozen food. Provide rock or pipe structures for shelter and a potential nesting site. A secure lid is essential.
