Melanotaenia goldiei is native to the Goldie River drainage near Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. It is one of the larger species in the genus, with males developing a pronounced high-backed body profile and brilliant red and blue scale iridescence at maturity. A robust, active species that needs a spacious aquarium and regular water changes to look its best.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard water. Tank: 200 L+ minimum; robust plants or none, strong filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; large flakes, pellets, and generous frozen/live food portions. Behaviour: Active, boisterous, peaceful schooling fish; males spar vigorously. Compatibility: Best with other large rainbowfish or robust medium-sized community fish.
