Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus
Origin: Line Islands, Phoenix Islands, Central Pacific
The Goldspotted Angelfish (Apolemichthys xanthopunctatus) is one of the most exclusive and rarely encountered angels in the marine hobby, endemic to the remote Line Islands and Phoenix Islands in the Central Pacific — an area that is both logistically difficult to access and subject to significant collection restrictions. Its dark body is covered in a constellation of vivid golden-yellow spots that create a spectacular, star-field pattern visible from across the room in a well-lit aquarium. Exceptionally rare in the trade, specimens command premium prices when available and are immediately snapped up by serious collectors. Care is demanding — it requires a very large, mature system with abundant live rock and a sponge-rich diet to thrive long-term.
Provide a minimum 550-liter mature aquarium with extensive live rock for grazing and territory. Feed a diverse, high-quality diet including sponge-enriched angel formulas, frozen mysis, marine flake, spirulina, and fresh seafood. Can be territorial toward other large angels. May pick at large-polyp stony corals and clam mantles in reef systems. Requires stable, pristine water quality and an experienced, dedicated keeper.
