Pomacentrus chrysurus
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Maldives to Vanuatu
Pomacentrus chrysurus, the Goldtail Damselfish, is an attractive species from the Indo-Pacific with a brownish-gray body that grades elegantly into a bright, striking golden-yellow caudal fin — a subtle but eye-catching contrast that helps distinguish this species from the large array of similar damselfish. Juveniles display additional blue facial markings and dorsal highlights that gradually fade as the fish matures. Like most damselfish it is bold, hardy, and adaptable — easy to feed and tolerant of imperfect water conditions — but carries the typical semi-aggressive territorial tendencies of the family, particularly toward other small, similarly-sized fish that enter its claimed territory within the rockwork.
Provide at least 75 liters with abundant live rock for territory establishment and shelter. Feed twice daily with quality frozen mysis, marine flake, and small pellets. Can be territorial toward other small reef fish; introduce carefully and provide sufficient space. Generally reef-safe with corals and larger invertebrates. Hardy and forgiving of water quality fluctuations — a suitable species for beginners to marine fishkeeping.
