Goniopora sp.
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Goniopora sp. in red is one of the most visually spectacular LPS corals, extending dozens of long, waving polyps with rounded heads that resemble a field of flowers swaying in the current — hence its Flowerpot Coral name. Previously regarded as nearly impossible to keep long-term, modern understanding of its photosynthetic and feeding requirements has made it substantially more achievable in mature, well-fed reef systems.
Medium PAR (100–200). Moderate, indirect flow that causes polyps to wave gently without retraction. Alk 8–9 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Target feed with fine zooplankton-size foods (rotifers, Reef Roids, live phytoplankton) 3–4× weekly — feeding is critical for long-term survival. Requires a mature system (6+ months) with stable parameters. Allow substantial space — polyps extend 10–15 cm beyond skeleton. Intermediate to advanced.
