Goodea atripinnis
Origin: Mexico (Lerma-Santiago basin)
Goodea atripinnis is a robust goodeid livebearer from the Lerma-Santiago basin of central Mexico, one of the larger species in the family and notable for the striking jet-black fins of dominant males. Unlike poeciliid livebearers, goodeids give birth to larger, more fully-developed fry that are nourished during gestation via a specialized trophotaenia structure rather than a placenta. The species is easy to keep and breed, making it an excellent introduction to the fascinating world of goodeid conservation breeding.
Keep in a well-planted aquarium of at least 100 L with hard, alkaline water (pH 7.0–8.2, GH 8–20) at 18–25°C. Feed a varied omnivorous diet with a significant vegetable component: spirulina flake, blanched vegetables, and high-quality livebearing fish pellets. Keep in groups with multiple females per male to distribute male attention. Females bear 10–40 large fry that can take newly hatched Artemia from day one.
