Gorgonian sp.
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Caribbean
Photosynthetic gorgonian sea fans in purple are among the most visually dramatic coral displays available, growing as flat, fan-like colonies of branching wire-like structures with tiny polyps along each branch. Photosynthetic gorgonians (as opposed to non-photosynthetic deep-water forms) are significantly more manageable in home aquariums and grow steadily under appropriate light and flow conditions. Purple sea fans create a stunning natural backdrop behind the primary rock formation.
Medium PAR (100–250) with the fan oriented perpendicular to the primary light source. Strong, chaotic flow directed across the fan surface to deliver suspended particles to the polyps. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Target feed with rotifers and phytoplankton 3× weekly. Ensure excellent water quality — gorgonians are susceptible to cyanobacteria and algae overgrowing their branches in high-nutrient systems. Photosynthetic species require less supplemental feeding than non-photosynthetic varieties.
