Serrasalmus gouldingi
Also known as: Gouldingi Piranha, Rio Negro Piranha
Origin: Rio Negro and Rio Branco, Brazil
Serrasalmus gouldingi is named for the renowned ichthyologist Michael Goulding and originates from the blackwater systems of the Rio Negro and Rio Branco in Brazil. It is notable for its unusually pale body colouration — often near-white — and large, prominent eyes relative to other Serrasalmus, likely adaptations to the deeply tannin-stained, low-visibility blackwater habitat.
Very rarely exported, it commands premium prices when available. Its extreme blackwater origin means husbandry must be very precise: very soft, very acidic water with high tannin content is essential for health and stress management. A true specialist species for the most experienced keeper.
Piranha restrictions apply; Rio Negro export regulations in Brazil must be observed.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft water essential (0-4 dGH); heavy tannin supplementation with peat, driftwood, and Indian almond leaves mandatory. Tank: Minimum 400L; dark substrate and very dim lighting; roots and driftwood for cover; meticulous water change regime. Feeding: Carnivore; fish fillet, whole prawns; use tongs; this species may refuse food initially — allow an acclimatisation period. Breeding: No records; rarity and value make ethical management of specimens paramount. Compatibility: Solo housing only; verify legal acquisition from licensed suppliers with proper Brazilian export documentation.
