Melanotaenia trifasciata
Also known as: Goyder River Rainbowfish, Three-banded Rainbowfish
Origin: Australia (Goyder River, Northern Territory)
The Goyder River population of Melanotaenia trifasciata is widely considered one of the most spectacularly coloured freshwater fish in the world. Originating from a clear, fast-flowing river in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, dominant males develop deep red-orange to scarlet flanks with a vivid black mid-lateral band and black-edged finnage that creates a dramatic, high-contrast appearance unmatched by most other rainbowfish populations.
This population is clearly distinct in colouration from other M. trifasciata populations such as those from the Daly River or Mitchell River, and dedicated hobbyists maintain pure strains to preserve the exceptional coloration. It is well-established in captivity and available through specialist suppliers and hobbyist breeders. The species requires clean, well-oxygenated, slightly alkaline, moderately hard water and a spacious aquarium.
Male Goyder River Rainbowfish develop their signature colour most vividly from about 12 months of age onwards, and the colour intensifies further in the presence of rival males. They are competitive but entirely peaceful, and their vigorous displays make them fascinating to observe in a species or rainbowfish-only aquarium.
Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 24–30°C, moderately hard; brisk, well-oxygenated current preferred. Tank: Minimum 200 L; very open swimming space with plants and wood as décor at sides and rear only. Feeding: High-quality flake, pellets; generous live and frozen foods for full colour development in males. Breeding: Egg scatterer; dedicated spawning tank recommended; condition both sexes well before breeding. Compatibility: Peaceful with other large rainbowfish; can be kept in a single-species group or large community.
