Corydoras gracilis
Also known as: Graceful Cory, Gracilis Cory, Slender Pygmy Cory
Origin: Brazil (Rio Madeira basin)
Corydoras gracilis is one of the smaller members of the genus, with a slender, streamlined body profile that recalls the pygmy cories (C. pygmaeus, C. hastatus) while being slightly more robust. It carries a dark mid-lateral stripe running from the eye to the caudal fin base, set against a pale cream body with a subtle metallic sheen. It is native to the Rio Madeira basin in western Brazil.
In the aquarium, C. gracilis is notably more active than many larger cories. It schools energetically, often swimming in tight formation through the water column rather than remaining on the substrate. This makes it an excellent choice for aquarists who want the cory's bottom-cleaning utility combined with more dynamic mid-water display.
Care requirements are moderate — clean, soft to slightly hard water, a fine substrate, and a group of at least eight individuals are the keys to success. The species is fully peaceful and can be combined with virtually any non-aggressive tankmate of appropriate size.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 23–27°C; good filtration and low nitrates required. Tank: 40 L minimum; fine sand, some plant cover, and open swimming space for schooling display. Feeding: Micro-granules, sinking pellets, baby brine shrimp, and finely crushed frozen bloodworm. Breeding: Similar to other small cories; cool water trigger and fine-leafed plants; relatively small clutches. Compatibility: Excellent with small tetras, microrasboras, dwarf cichlids, and peaceful invertebrates.
