Pimelodella gracilis
Also known as: Graceful Pimelodella, Graceful Catfish
Origin: South America (widespread)
Pimelodella gracilis is one of the most widely distributed small pimelodid-allied catfish in South America, found across lowland river systems from Venezuela to Argentina. Its slender, almost transparent silvery body and enormously long barbels give it a delicate, almost ethereal appearance that contrasts with its active, confident behaviour.
In the aquarium, this species is surprisingly bold for a small catfish, often swimming in open water and actively foraging. It is peaceful toward fish of comparable size and makes an excellent occupant of a larger community aquarium with South American species. It is also tolerant of a wide range of water conditions.
The Graceful Pimelodella is hardy and adaptable, making it suitable for intermediate keepers new to South American catfish. It appreciates subdued lighting and some driftwood or plant cover but does not demand heavy decoration.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, broad tolerance; prefers clean, moderately flowing water. Tank: Minimum 150L; some driftwood cover, sandy substrate, subdued lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, flake; feeds readily. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with medium South American community fish.
