Ctenopharyngodon idella
Origin: East Asia (captive bred)
The Grass Carp is a large, herbivorous cyprinid used commercially and recreationally to control aquatic vegetation in ponds, lakes, and waterways. Its olive-silver body and impressive growth rate make it a dramatic pond specimen; small juveniles begin grazing on soft-leaved aquatic plants immediately and are effective natural weed controllers from day one. Note that a permit may be required for release into natural Belgian and Dutch waterways; always check local regulations before stocking.
House in a large, well-filtered pond of at least 5,000 L at adult size. Temperature 4–28°C; fully cold-tolerant through Belgian winters. The primary diet is aquatic vegetation; supplement with quality sinking pellets and vegetable matter if plant availability is limited. Peaceful with other large pond fish. Be aware it will rapidly consume any soft-leaved plants in a heavily planted pond. Grows very quickly — plan for its eventual large adult size.
