Pomacanthus arcuatus
Origin: Caribbean, Atlantic
The Gray Angelfish (Pomacanthus arcuatus) is a large, powerful, and robust large angelfish from the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic, appreciated for being among the hardiest of the large Pomacanthus species while still displaying the regal, commanding presence of the genus. Adults develop a distinguished grayish-brown body with pale yellow-edged scales and characteristically pale, whitish lips, creating a subtle but elegant color pattern. They can grow to an impressive 60 cm in the wild, requiring truly spacious aquariums in captivity. Their natural diet includes a heavy proportion of sponge material, making sponge-enriched angel formulas a non-negotiable component of their captive diet for long-term health and bright coloration.
Provide a minimum 600-liter FOWLR aquarium with abundant live rock for grazing and territorial establishment. Feed a broad, highly varied diet daily: sponge-enriched angelfish formulas, frozen mysis, marine flake, spirulina, and fresh seafood. Generally compatible with other robust large fish but territorial toward similar-sized large angels. Not safe for full reef systems due to nipping at corals and clam mantles. Maintain pristine water quality with regular water changes.
