Betta splendens
Also known as: Green Betta, Jade Betta, Emerald Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Pure green bettas are difficult to produce as the green phenotype in bettas is iridescent rather than pigment-based, and is easily contaminated with blue iridocyte expression. True greens appear a vivid, solid jade or forest green under proper lighting. These are specialist fish commanding higher prices and great interest from serious collectors.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — bright lighting is essential to display the green iridescence. Tank: minimum 20L; a well-lit planted tank with natural tones brings out the green beautifully. Feeding: carnivore — high-quality betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; two feedings daily. Behaviour: males aggressive to own species — one per tank. Compatibility: peaceful community tanks; a rare and conversation-starting specimen.
