Ophiarachna incrassata
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Ophiarachna incrassata, the Green Brittle Star, is one of the largest and most visually striking brittle stars available to marine aquarists, displaying a vivid green-and-black patterned central disc and long, banded arms capable of spanning over 30 cm in large specimens. During the day it retreats into rock crevices with only its arms visible, emerging at night to actively scavenge detritus, uneaten food, and organic matter from the substrate and rock surfaces. It is an effective and impressive clean-up crew member, but carries a significant caveat — like other large Ophiarachna species, it is known to capture and consume small fish and crustaceans at night, earned it the nickname 'Green Death' among hobbyists. Tank mate selection is critical: only house with larger, robust fish that cannot be captured.
Suitable for FOWLR and fish-only systems with appropriately sized, robust tank mates. Do not house with small fish (under 8–10 cm), small shrimp, nano fish, sleeping fish that hide near the substrate, or any slow-moving bottom dwellers. Provide ample live rock with crevices for daytime retreat. No special feeding required — it consumes detritus and uneaten food. Maintain standard marine water quality. Avoid copper-based medications.
