Etroplus suratensis
Also known as: Green Chromide, Banded Chromide
Origin: India and Sri Lanka (coastal brackish/freshwater)
The Green Chromide is one of only three species in the genus Etroplus, making it a uniquely positioned Indian subcontinent cichlid distinct from all African rift lake species. It is native to coastal lagoons, estuaries, and rivers of India and Sri Lanka where it tolerates fresh to brackish conditions. Its remarkable parental behaviour — fry feed on mucus secreted by the parents' skin — is a standout trait.
Water: 22-28°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard water; a small amount of aquarium salt (1-3g/L) benefits long-term health. Tank: Minimum 400L; large open swimming space; robust plants or no plants; strong filtration. Feeding: Herbivore-omnivore — algae, plant matter, quality pellets, blanched greens, and frozen foods. Behaviour: Forms strong pair bonds with devoted biparental care; can be aggressive toward other tank inhabitants during breeding. Compatibility: Large robust tankmates only; not compatible with typical rift lake cichlids — best in a species or large oddball tank.
