Symphysodon discus var.
Also known as: Green Discus
Origin: South America (Amazon, Brazil)
The Green Discus is a captive-bred variety that captures the natural, earthy beauty of wild discus coloration while presenting a distinct aesthetic character. The base body is typically olive green to brownish-green, richly overlaid with turquoise horizontal striping, reddish-brown reticulations, and in finer specimens, a metallic green sheen that shimmers under aquarium lighting. Unlike the bold, saturated varieties produced by modern selective breeding, the Green Discus appeals to aquarists who prefer a more naturalistic look.
Drawing on the same wild South American heritage as all captive-bred discus, the Green Discus thrives in conditions that mimic the tannin-stained, ultra-soft, warm blackwater rivers of the Amazon basin. Wild discus populations from which captive varieties descend historically inhabited river margins and flooded forest zones, feeding on invertebrates and organic detritus.
In the aquarium, Green Discus are peaceful, relatively slow-moving fish that benefit from being kept in groups. Their unique, natural-toned coloration deepens and becomes more vibrant in well-maintained, acidic, soft water — the same conditions that promote health and longevity. As with all discus, pristine water quality, a varied diet, and a stress-free environment are the keys to enjoying these remarkable cichlids at their best.
Tank Setup
Minimum 200 litres, tall format preferred. Dark substrate and driftwood create a naturalistic setting that complements the Green Discus's earthy tones and helps it feel secure. Indian almond leaves and peat filtration can be used to add tannins and lower pH naturally. Gentle filtration via sponge or canister with a spray bar is essential.
Water Parameters
Temperature 28–32 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, GH 1–8, KH 0–3. RO water remineralised to soft parameters is ideal. Perform 30–50% water changes two to three times weekly. Keep nitrates below 10 ppm.
Feeding
A varied omnivorous diet is required: discus-specific pellets or granules, beef heart mix, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and white mosquito larvae. Feed two to three times daily in small portions and remove uneaten food immediately.
Tank Mates
Ideal companions include cardinal tetras, rummy-nose tetras, small peaceful corydoras, and otocinclus. All tank mates must tolerate high temperatures and soft-acid water. Avoid nippy or aggressive species.
Behaviour
Green Discus are calm and sociable. Groups display natural hierarchy behaviour with minimal aggression. Their coloration responds visibly to mood and water quality — a vibrant, even green indicates a healthy, contented fish. Bonded pairs make attentive parents.
Health
The usual discus health concerns apply: hole-in-the-head, internal parasites, and bacterial infections. Meticulous water quality and quarantine protocol are essential. Monitor fish daily and respond to behavioural changes promptly.
